Another way to consider the let’s play analogy: why would you watch your favorite youtuber fumble over and over on a playthrough when you can watch a trained AI do it perfectly? If the gameplay is “objectively better”, why not watch that? Because there’s an innate connection we feel with the person playing, even if vicariously.
We get invested in their struggles and triumphs and, in a way, they become our own struggles and triumphs. Same goes for how we connect with an artist when appreciating their art, even if indirectly. We take a moment to look at the art and try and tap into the narrative they created in the art and find connection within those shared ideas.
