One minor issue, allowing “labor” at the table cannot work in the US today. Unfortunately, that ship has sailed, I suppose we can thank Regan and anybody who voted for him. But why am I making this claim? Since the labor unions have been so heavily decimated, the opportunities for influence have essentially diminished to zero. I have experience in a union manufacturing plant and it is very likely the least efficient shop in the US. The business has something of a moat protecting it from competition and the crazy tariffs will probably allow it to continue but it could and should be almost fully automated. Ultimately, I have no doubt, it will be, but there will be some transition time involved. The US cannot rely on manufacturing to reestablish the foundation of a labor base. It cannot happen, in general, the transition from manual labor to automation has not only brought about nearly exponential efficiency improvements, it is also wildly safer, far less prone to error and better in nearly every measurable way. So, I am very much with Bernie on his concerns, but simply allowing unions seats at the corporate tables is not going to stop the wave. If these people were to insist on maintaining inefficient labor counts, the affected companies will reestablish where these constraints do not exist. My best guess is the only way out of this will be some sort of socialism, because the opportunities for folks to pick themselves up by the bootstraps will continue to decline. One of the scariest things is throughout history, smart people have always generally been able to provide themselves a living. But I’m afraid the rise of artificial intelligence will diminish the value of human intelligence. When you need to be the most worried is when the smartest people cannot afford a decent existence. Why, because they are smart, and will find a solution. And guess what it won’t be…. The Cletus militia gangs with boom boom sticks. Why? Smart people will execute any necessary offense from afar. Not to be all dystopian, but people better start recognizing what is happening and vote for some more people like Bernie, or things could get a bit dicey.
