I purchased my Tesla Model 3 in 2019. I also purchased autopilot, which at the time was an additional cost. A few months later I purchased full self driving. I used auto pilot extensively until 2021 when I finally received the full self driving beta. The first time you engage autopilot and let the car drive itself it's like being a kid and the first time you rode your bike no hands. You are extremely aware of what could go wrong or you you could wind up face first on the pavement. You quickly learn what the car is capable of doing and when you need to be vigilant.
Say what you want about Musk—some of the criticism is absolutely deserved—but as someone who considers themselves reasonably intelligent, I can say without hesitation that Autopilot and later Full Self-Driving have made me safer. Common sense taught me quickly when I could trust the system to help me and when I needed to be ready to step in.
The irony is that in our push to legislate “perfect” safety—because some people can’t be trusted to use technology responsibly—we may end up making ourselves less safe.
