I've been really frustrated by the constant 'doom' discussions regarding AI - until today....
For a while I've been deliberately staying away from narratives that catastrophise AI, and I've been thinking a lot about my avoidance. This morning I thought, if I'm ever going to feel I get a balanced view on AI, it will be listening to someone who has 40 years of expertise in AI, coupled with the best interviewer on the planet. Thank you Stephen for asking such great questions to understand what Dr Russell is a) concerned about and why, and b) is realistic about what humanity can do to weigh in on this issue. I felt myself really shift on the issue of superintelligence in particular, listening to your podcast and that's the point isn't it? We need the 'average' person to listen, learn and understand what they can do to contribute to a safer future with AI as an enabler not a destroyer. I for one am now thinking about who I can lobby to push more focus on the safety issue of super intelligence, and one of my goals for 2026 is learn a lot more about AI so rather than avoiding what scares me, I can do what I can to inform and influence change.
