I hear this concern about the social impacts of AI, and I don’t think it is well founded. Most of the victims of the opioid crisis were hooked on the drug through legal but unscrupulous means, not because they were bored. I also tend to hear this from people who derive great meaning from their work, and most people just don’t: most are just trying to get by and not die in poverty. We need to create a society which redefines work in a new way, one which is more flexible and optional than the forced servitude under which we now live.
