London is home to Google DeepMind, where much of Google’s AI research takes place. The UK and the USA do not have parity on many laws that will affect technology, let alone AI.
What we learnt from Brexit is that making your own rules only works within your borders; when doing anything internationally, it makes sense if we all follow the same guidebook.
If we all follow the same rules, it won’t matter if another country moves faster because we all benefit. We learnt this during the Pandemic. If one country is vaccinated and another they depend on isn’t, this slows down trade and everything else that they both cooperate on.
The issue is that we haven't recognised AI as a utility, similar to the Internet. AI, in many respects, is now good enough for a lot of processes in life, so now the question to answer is how can we apply it effectively, reliably and safely?
