Hey! I'm not an AI "Art" guy, or prompter, or whatever they're called now, but I do have some questions as a person who's highly interested in (and also studying) the science behind AI (I'm a CS major!) and its philosophy (as a hobby :)).
I won't deny AI Art steals work. It does. It takes the efforts of the artist and fails to add anything unique to it or, as many artists who I've asked this question before have described it, it fails to add style.
So is this the only issue with AI art, in your opinion? Is the issue with AI Art less so about the fact that it STEALS art, but more so about the fact it lacks any originality, uniqueness, or perspective? In this video you mention that it's ok for people to get inspired by your art, but isn't inspiration a form of theft? If I am shined upon by the cursed mirror of art I will feel the need to steal it, reform it, remix it, butcher it, dissect it, study it. And once I've done it all, I will say "thank you", but I will never apologize for my crime. If AI were to eventually become sentient and be able to do all this, (of course, that won't happen for a while because sentience is connected to our understanding of sentence, and our understanding of sentience is veeeerrry little..), then would you be oppossed to it stealing your art? Assume for the sake of the previous question that AI will continue to function similarly to how it did before it gained sentience; in other words, it will continue to be a "give prompt, recieve answer" type of machine, but it will be fully aware of its existence and will be able to form biases and therefore styles. So, in this scenario, is it ok for the AI to steal art? Will it even be considered theft anymore if it has biases and styles that it applies to the art it sees? If your answer is "no, it will still not be ethical for AI to 'steal' art", then the question devolves into "when is it ok to 'steal' art?" and, "how does the AI not meet these criteria?", which can then eventually devolve into "Should sentient AI be given human rights?" (yes I know, BIG leap, but it does actually devolve into that at some point).
I would like to reiterate that I am not a defender of AI Art. I do personally believe that those who try to call themselves "AI Artists" are lacking validation in their lives, but I also don't entirely believe that people dislike AI simply because it "steals art". Isn't the entire point of art to steal? Don't good artists steal? The word "inspiration" is, in my opinion, far too vague to be used as a line dividing theft and originality. Even modern-day companies understand this and it's why companies like Nintendo are able to exploit the fair-use laws, claiming that certain games or videos lack inspiration. I understand that AI is losing court cases regarding copyright, but, I do still believe it's good to define when exactly it's ok to "steal" art and if stealing art is a privilege or a right.
