Why do we have Donald Trump as POTUS? Automation has been wiping out good jobs for decades now. Real wages have stagnated too as the result of automation mainly, with some minor effects from de-unionization and outsourcing. This created the economic conditions that demoralized a large group of relatively lower class and less educated people, the "working class", with many in regions with conservative values...All the conditions were ripe for a conman faux populist faux conservative like Trump to arise. Now, with AI and advanced robotics accelerating the process, what's next? Well, it's already here: Technocratic feudalism, and to keep the system running we'll need UBI. This is clearly an evolution toward becoming like the Borg of Star Trek, and it's what humanity seems want especially since it promises us economic growth/prosperity (IF we can get the distribution of wealth made more fair of course). We never wanted those tedious, boring factory jobs anyway and the factory workers have long been nothing but stopgaps in the process of tech progress that almost all of us cheer onward. So, forget about bringing jobs back and make sure we have a decent UBI. Right now, Social Security is sort of fulfilling that role but what we really need is to use automation to keep productivity up high enough so that everyone can retire earlier or work just part-time with UBI.
