There’s no real debate left about whether self-driving trucks are, or soon will be, safer. They are. End of story. There will be accidents. There will be fatalities. But on balance, the roads will be far safer. The same is true for self-driving cars, which will be rolling out in ever-greater numbers over the next decade. Between safety and economics, the entire profession of driving is on the chopping block. This is not something anyone can halt. It’s a rerun of what happened during the industrial revolution and the rise of mechanization. The world moved on, and the lamplighters disappeared.
This is the AI revolution in its purest form—self-driving is just one chapter in a much larger story. None of this happens without AI, and the shockwaves from AI’s impact on employment are only starting to build. The tsunami is already here, slowly but relentlessly sweeping across the global economy and changing the lives of everyone it touches. Drivers are just the opening act. And to be blunt: there's no good spin on the impact it'll have on drivers. It's time society deals with the huge impact AI is having on the labor market and by extension the economy.
