One huge missing part of the argument is from people like myself. I have near total aphantasia. I can’t mentally picture anything more than blobs and vague colors, and I only know what something is supposed to look like because I’ve memorized how to describe it. I can tell you what an apple looks like, but all I picture when I think of an apple is a vague red blob with a bit of green and yellow. I can’t even picture my own mother’s face, but I can describe what I know she looks like. I hold artists in such high regard because they can give me a way to picture something as more than just words and vague blobs. One of my favorite pieces of art is Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” It’s not fancy, it’s not realistic. What it is, is a way to look at the world as Van Gogh saw it - dark, messy, and utterly beautiful. A piece that was made by a mind which could vividly see life’s beautiful imperfections and make them seen so everyone else can know the beauty in imperfection. I could never paint a “Starry Night” of my own. I can draw a tree or a house, an eagle or a fish or a cat. But I can only draw them how I know they’re supposed to look like. The creative aspect is lost on me because unlike the vast majority of artists, I cannot picture something so creatively unique. And that is why I love artists and HATE AI art.
