There’s nothing normal about Gen AI technology. Normal technology earns its adoption by increasing productively opening new markets or having a positive benefit/cost ratio. Gen AI is more like a fraud akin to Theranos. It’s actually less reliable and useful for domain-specific tasks like legacy ai tools so in many cases it’s a downgrade. As a general purpose tool it’s simply too unreliable. That means it not only can’t replace people, but it creates more work and more stress for them. At the same time it’s just good enough for slop and scams and it requires massive amounts of energy and water, all major negative externalities. This industry is continuing solely because the fintech industry itself is increasingly corrupted and failing, the tech industry more broadly is contracting and is looking for something, anything, to generate growth and media, as usual, it failing to ask questions and apply even a modicum of skepticism about numbers that don’t come close to adding up.
