maybe it’s because tech when I was a kid was too slow to rapid jump, most things you asked the computer to do took the computer 10 to 15 seconds. But I really have to say, I’m not sure that this issue is isolated to the classroom, or even due to technology being in the classroom. I think it has more to do with the decline in personal computer sales and the Rise and tablet sales, especially the practice of parents using an iPad as a pacifier for ages 3 to 10. my wife teaches early childhood education, and she notices a great issue of impatience with Chromebook because they are not touchscreen and are not usually as responsive or fast as iPad's. Students go from happily using the Chromebook to throwing it halfway across the room because the computer did not react to their click the way they expected it to. The patience for trial and error and discovery through the use of technology has evaporated. Give a kid a set of tools, and they want to learn how to use them. But give a kid an offbrand cereal, or an ice cream that is in a package which is harder to open than they are used to, and they lose their minds. They aren’t seeing computers as a tool to accomplish something, but as a device filled with endless, effortless entertainment. And to be fair, that’s affecting everyone not just students. About 20 years ago, the tech industry shifted away from building computers that were tools to computers that were consumption machines. 20 years ago, I was using my laptop to edit home videos, index and catalog my photos, and even create my own podcast. Now, no matter what piece of technology I grab, it’s almost always to consume video or written content which an algorithm chose for me. computers used to be a toolbox, now they’re a drug
