Love Saagar but the current AI moral panic arc is a fountain of abysmal takes. There's no shortage of reasons to criticize Sam Altman, but someone using ChatGPT (or smokin' the natty herb) to indulge their self-destructive tendencies isn't an indictment of OpenAI, it's an indictment of a fundamentally broken society which has intentionally undermined every facet of human existence to extract profit and consolidate control. Tens of millions of young people see plainly that their prospects for social and economic success are tiny and shrinking every year, that the system is rigged, that every company and institution is out to scam them. Corporate hijacking of the internet has created a hyper-monetized, all-consuming digital culture where human beings hold no value outside of their marketability as a commodity, or their novelty as a piece of content. The idea that antisocial, self-destructive behavior is being driven by weed gummies and stepsister porn is nuts. Our vaunted luminaries of tech and finance have assembled the largest engine of quiet psychological suffering in human history, and the excess will seep its way out one way or another.
