I was driving my Duramax Diesel truck when it started making a noise. I rolled down both front windows and listened. The noise was coming more from the passenger side. I then sped up and slowed the motor. The noise changed in pitch, so I knew that it was in the drive train. Finally, I put the transmission in neutral and revved the engine while the truck was going down the road. The noise again changed with the engine speed. This step eliminated the transmission, drive line and axles because in neutral, the truck wasn't changing speed, only the engine was. I then had a pretty good idea that it was either the serpentine belt or the pulleys that the belt rides on, or possibly the alternator bearing or the water pump bearing. I've been wrenching on cars, trucks, heavy equipment, chainsaws, generators, you name it since I was 14. I'm almost 65 now. I drew upon a lifetime of mechanical experience to draw that conclusion. When I got home, I lifted the hood of the truck (engine running) and proceeded to spray a little WD40 on each of the pulleys. The second pulley, the noise immediately stopped, so I had my culprit. For fun, I described the issue to Gemini using the same description as I did here above, speaking like a person talking, even stating the noise seemed stronger from the passenger side window. Gemini took about four seconds and then responded: "It could be your serpentine belt, idler pulleys, tensioner pulley, alternator, or water pump. I would check the idler pulleys first." Now I have posted this in another AI video comment section and received push back that AI is simply reading through forums to get its information, nothing more. I feel like folks like these are missing the point. They jump right into the AI debate and miss the value of AI available right now. To everyday people (like me), why does it matter? Why get bogged down in is AI, AGI, ASI, smarter than humans, or is AI conscious? In this case (I have many examples) AI accurately solved a mechanical issue that was described to it as if the person had zero mechanical knowledge in a few seconds. It gave the user a correct solution that in humans would take decades of mechanical experience to acquire, heavily relying on reasoning, or many hours in forums asking questions, waiting for someone to reply, sorting through bad or incorrect solutions, watching many videos (once you have a narrowed to a possible solution) and trying to wade through all of this information, without any mechanical experience and come up with the correct diagnosis. Gemini also recommend getting an entire kit instead of buying the belt and pulleys separately and replacing them one at a time saying if one is bad, replace them all. It also provided several links to videos of installing a serpentine belt and pulley kit and in a followup question links to purchase the correct kit for my truck (make, model, year). Used properly, AI can already accomplish tasks and find solutions that are incredibly complex in seconds that assist average people with real world problems for free.
