I was using ChatGPT for scientific research and discovered this problem. It found papers on a subject I'd never heard of, exactly on the research I asked it about. I tried finding them and when I asked ChatGPT to find a link, it gave me a broken link. I asked then where those articles came from and it said they didn't know or that they didn't exist. Very strange but thankfully it was all in the same day so no harm done and of course if you can't find a source, never cite it.
