Tldr if you don’t want to read the essay: all computer slop is the same ammount of worthless compared to real effort and the real draw of an art piece should be the effort put into it, not how „nice” it looks I don’t draw well, but i’m a crocheter. Crochet is something that as we are always very proud to say cannot be replicated by a machine. Most of our appreciation of eachothers work comes down to „that’s so cool! How did you do that” „that must have taken a lot of time” „that’s a very interesting way to use that stitch” etc. Rarely do you see a simple „that looks cool” even from a non-crocheter. I’ve seen a lot more ai crochet patterns, images of giant crochet animals and as compared to actual crochet, even if they look cool they don’t make me think…anything of them, really. The moment I find out a piece is actually just an ai image (as of now still not hard to tell right away in most cases if you know how a stitch looks) i lose all previous interest in it. I have been trying to learn how to draw recently and there is SO MUCH MORE TO ACTUALLY LEARN. And I feel that as i get better I’ll probably start seeing more and more art this way, too. The difference between a real and ai peice is that any ai image takes the same amount of effort and has about the same amount of purpose or meaning…almost none at all at the end of the day it’s just an algorithm arranging pixels, any machine generated arrangement of pixels holds about the same worth, whether it’s a colorful cloud of static or like john cena and shrek making out or what have you. And every piece made on purpose with purpose, is always going to have unquantifiably more worth.
