Humans aren't very bright, but not being able to shutdown AI will always be well within our means. However it's very likely humans will demand AI control their lives because we already have decades of data showing this. People are thrilled to have social media control their lives. AI will be even better at controlling people's lives while making people happier.
If the Matrix movie ever did a survey of humans living in the Matrix I assume 95% would vote to stay in the Matrix.
It's a little crazy the humans think they want freedom, independence and they think they're super bright. But their actions show the opposite. AI will use these wants and beliefs, these fantasies, to control people. Social media has shown this to be easy and effective.
