I question why consciousness is relevent to the discussion. Define AI and categorize neural networks however you want but evidently consciousness is not a prerequisite of capability. Most of everyone I'm aware of in tech, however pessimistic or optimistic they might be, have been far more interested in their capabilities. Because these are, regardless of lack of consciousness, powerful systems that can achieve or even surpass human ability in narrow windows. Since they're trained to maximize efficiency and are more suited for solving problems that require complex pattern recognition. AlphaFold is a prime example. Also as it turns out, patterns of human logic could be picked up through language making it increasingly generally capable. It not having a subjective experience to understand the world does not make it any less impactful or disruptive to society.
