The only reason to develop anthropomorphic robots that mimic human appearance mannerism and movement is to create emotional attachment and to control people to a heightened degree. This is exactly the pretext under which authoritarianism will flourish and mark my words in our lifetime we will see legislation passed that affords artificial intelligence systems, or mobile/autonomous artificial intelligence systems, the same rights and privileges as human beings - irrespective of sentience or not - as it will be classed as both rights and property at the same time.
I will see these things as less than a toaster, and shall not hesitate to run them over in my truck when I see one on the road.
