The lack of humility in the face of our own power is truly staggering. Always comes back to this quote: 'People are always so concerned over whether they can do something, they never stop to think if they should.' Written by Michael Crichton in Jurassic Park. The same author that wrote many bio-tech novels that were highly researched and aided by those in the field. Its not the movies or the stories that you should all be concerned about, its the concepts that give way to those stories being told. If you can program a robot to be sentient, then that robot learns by itself. If that robot learns by itself, then it has the ability to disagree with the laws and statutes that govern it, just as we can disagree with tried and true 'beliefs' or 'faiths.' If that robot can then be sentient enough to disagree, then it can be sentient enough to believe that it has all the answers, just as humans do. If that robot reaches that stage, it can create more robots and program them to have the same understanding. If all of those robots reach that stage, then humanity will be seen as second class. If humanity is seen as second class and damaging to the world we both live in, higher intelligence will deem that humans are too much of a threat to the planet. Wars, global warming, political indifference etc. If that happens, then the robots will deem we are no longer a viable circumstance, such as we see vermin such as foxes, rabbits etc. Robots will eliminate us in the name of preserving the planet. We think we are 'God' but we are just intelligence. 'God' may just be a higher being, much in the same vein as we think we are in relation to robots. Regardless of whether or not we created them, if they surpass us (which they will), then we will be deemed irrelevant. This is a dangerous step, and should not be taken lightly. People are so megalomaniacal, its ridiculous.
