I really feel like this old Marxist sentiment of 'Automation vs Labor' is misguided. Do you REALLY believe Republicans when they say 'humans need labor to live with dignity'? Increasing automation is inevitably a good thing, objectively. Human labor introduces human needs and human error. The way to make human labor cheaper and more 'productive' generally comes at the cost of basic human needs, and a greater margin for human error.
Unlike human beings, machines have far simpler needs and can't be pressured into lying about whether those needs are met. It's obvious at a (qualified) glance when a machine isn't maintained and good to go. Likewise, when a machine makes an error, it's straightforward to isolate the root cause of that error and the same fix is generally applicable to all other machines of that type.
Automation isn't the enemy. Attributing the gains of automation to whoever has the capital to implement automation is the problem. Sure, automation is something that seems easy to 'fight' inside the status quo. Contracts, laws, and precedents about how you can and can't replace workers already exist. But the root problem isn't that machines are taking horrible jobs that destroy the bodies of people who work them. The root problem is the same problem that turns 'hard jobs' into 'horrible jobs that destroy the bodies of people who work them'. That is to say, capitalism. Even if you don't want to overthrow anyone with more than 8 figures of gross worth, the problem isn't that these jobs are disappearing, but that this isn't a world you can survive in without taking one. Focus on the systemic problems of society, not the shrinking reliance on humans suffering through unhealthy menial labor jobs.
