What if AI took over music? Which music would it be used for? Probably the stuff they use for amateur film scores, commercials, background filler music — the stuff that we used to find on subscription disks. Just tell it the parameters, and… BING! There’s your music. I can’t imagine it having much effect on the concert hall, or even on jazz clubs and the like where live music prevails. As a pro who made his living in the music business by wearing a lot of hats, let me say that I’m not at all in favor of taking away even one gig from musicians. But also having been a pro, I know that every craze that promises to make it easier or give you a larger share of the pie will run amok in the music industry. Nowhere is the circle of life/survival of the fittest more evident than in our clan. But what if it takes all the behind-the-scenes composing/arranging/recording jobs? That’s a lot of paychecks missing in action. But on the other hand, it might force more of us into more traditional performing situations. I see the internet, mainly YouTube and Instagram, have transformed public interest in the piano. We players were always out here, but had no real way to communicate with others, especially after music school is behind us. Now everyone is posting their little videos of this or that piece, and everyone else is commenting. Fans are developing, and I’ve seen more than a few careers launched this way. Valentina Lisitska, for one. (Maybe misspelled her last name?) Khatia Buniatishvilli, another one. It’s a way for talent to meet the public and get some feedback. Beats the hell out of departmental recitals. But my point is this: if AI is taking care of commercial music production, musicians can get back to performing. Maybe a new kind of instrumental music will develop — a pop/jazz/classical hybrid that steals people’s ears and gets them interested in following exciting performers again, like the days before recorded music, only now with recordings. These are just thoughts… I haven’t really given it the thought it deserves, but I’m just trying to see some kind of positive that will emerge, so that we can once again be on top of it and ride that wave!
