When self-checkout was introduced, did it lower grocery prices? (Answer: NO) Did it increase workers’ salaries (ANSWER: NO)? The opposite happened—many workers were no longer needed. The benefits did not go to consumers or employees; they went only to the owners.
The question now is whether the same thing will happen across almost all jobs. If we fail to tax companies that use AI and reward those who keep humans employed while assisting them with AI, we are headed for a lose-lose situation—where neither consumers nor workers benefit.
The future of the U.S. requires government intervention; capitalism alone will not suffice in this case.
