I think you're missing the large picture when we ask the question, " If AI Takes All Our Jobs, Who Buys Stuff?". In the United States, consumption accounts for roughly 68–70% of GDP, and most of that consumption is driven by households, not businesses or government. In this world you are theorizing, you are describing a place where less households are going to be earning more money and more households are going to be earning less money. If we assume that the Marginal Propensity to Consume for wealthy and non-wealthy stays the same, we're going to see a huge consumption drag as more high wage earners are kicked down the ladder. For example, if I'm a retailer like Amazon, a carmaker like Audi, etc. what happens when a significant portion of consumers now have less to spend on anything but the bare essentials? Many of these companies will have to entirely refactor their structure or just simply go out of business. Because those that are making more money aren't going to make up the difference in consumption. They'll spend a portion of their income, and then they'll invest just like they've always done. But all of the new billionaires aren't going to buy 50-60 Audi's to make up for the professionals that no longer exist. Further still, you have to deal with the fact that many of our government revenues rely on consumption, and now that will be gone or extremely diminished. Banking will be hugely affected, once all of these mid-tier professionals are automated out they won't be willing/able to take out loans for homes, cars, etc. Then eventually once everyone realizes the entire US economy is now a bunch of low wage earners and a sparse handful of high wage earners the size of the market will effectively be reduced. The cold hard reality is that UBI is going to be necessary. Capitalism doesn't work without consumers.
