These arguments by ai bros are so dumb. Its even in the case of the fountain or the comedian, for as much as the "art" piece itself sucks, there is actual thought behind it, particularly when you view art as a dialog. One of the fundamental issues with AI generated slop, is that it not only substitutes the skill of other artists for the prompter but the thought of the other artists as well. Even after a piece is concieved there are 1000000 different minute decisions which the artist has to make to determine what to do where. Its recursive thought and decisionmaking. So just writing a prompt and having the computer to steal a mathematical approximation of art from a bunch of actual artists is completely creatively bankrupt. Youre not just holding a high tech "brush" you are having the computer do the thinking and judgment for you. Something it is not capable of, so it has to steal it directly from a bunch of other people who have gone through the effort to do it. Like you said, AI slop, unlike all the artistic mediums requires actual art to steal from directly. When I do a painting, there is thought and planning. I make the concept, set up a reference shoot, design the lighting, take the reference photos, and then interpret those to make the actual oil painting. There are a million micro decisions that ai just steals from other people when someone types in "oil painting portrait of a woman" and congratulates themselves on the creative triumph that they have concieved of in those six words. Thats to say nothing of the all the skills necessary to actually be able to RENDER the final painting in the desired medium. Those are all separate things, separate decisions, and separate skills one needs to develop.
