1) Artists are not going to have to find another line of work. Even if this were everything people get upset over, there will always be demand for human-generated art. But it isn't what everyone seems to fear it is, either. Congratualtions to those who are professional artists who can use the AI art tools to make art faster, in styles they normally can't replicate, etc. You're the skilled artists using _art tools_ to generate _art._ The AI artist isn't making it. What an AI art tool makes in the hands of somebody who just tries a simple prompt and takes whatever he gets is "close enough." It isn't the kind of art that a bespoke artist will make, and when the wonder dies down, people will treat lazily-made AI art the way they treat lazily-made fanart. In the end, it will take people with skill at prompt creation, at composition, and at envisioning the final piece and using the tools well to generate it, and that's what artists will be paid to do. They'll make MORE pieces in less time thanks to the superior tools, especially as the AI art tools move beyond the "hee hee look I can make text prompts" stage and into seriously accommodating actual artistic processes. 2) Regardless of whether you think the AI tools are trained on "stolen art," or think it is no more "stolen" than having a self-taught artist who uses references from around the internet to base his creations on (and who trained himself with fanart as a teenager), the fact of the matter is that these trained networks _do not contain art,_ stolen or otherwise. The data storage requirements of their weight matrices are too small to contain the amount of art that people who don't know what they're talking about claim they contain. The AI tools have forms they lean towards, which they categorize combinations of inputs towards implementing at particular points on the image. The art used to train it is not stored in the network, in its weights, or anywhere that a final product needs to be able to access it. And every time somebody says that AI "contains stolen art," it hurts in the same way that somebody claiming impressionists don't know how to do real art because their art is less realistic than prior movements must grind the gears of art history majors.
