Warning: long tangent I love sewing, I work at it to become better because I want to improve, but also because I love the process. It’s fun for me to figure out patterns, draft my own, match fabrics, sew mock ups, learn from those mock ups and sew a garment that fits perfectly and comfortably. I love the act of sewing, which is what I consider the creative process. The making part. As a result of my enjoyment and subsequent hard work, sewing is now a skill I have. A few months ago, my sewing machine broke down so I took it to the repair shop. I told the man what was wrong, and he fixed the machine. Me telling him about the parts that weren’t working and asking him to repair the machine, and him then repairing my machine, doesn’t make me the person who fixed the machine. If that was Shad, based on his thought process, would proclaim that he fixed the sewing machine. After all, the input about what was wrong and the request to fix the machine would be coming from him. So what if the menial labour of actually fixing the problem was done by someone else? He prompted it, so he’s a skilled fixer of sewing machines now. So what’s going to happen when the AI bubble inevitably bursts and using AI suddenly becomes incredibly expensive to do, and we no longer have the people with actual skills? Because AI isn’t profitable. It’s being held up by billionaires who believe it might some day become profitable, and AI “artists” like Shad who think they can make a profit. When the funding stops and the price skyrockets, Shad will be left without an ability to make “art”, because whatever existing creative skills he had will have atrophied. And the actual artists? They had to do something else to make money. We, the people who aren’t ultra rich, will have lost access to art. So keep making art. Keep creating. Keep improving your skills and keep hoping. This too shall pass.
