"An artist has no right to speak to gods." Ha! The arrogance! They are bandits, nothing more. They plunder value, they don't produce it. The key phrase here is "market replacement." Artists copying or being inspired by the work of another generally does not produce a market replacement. AI models CAN -- that's the issue. If you use an AI system to generate and publish a product that can functionally replace the work of the artist that you sourced from, you can use it to steal business from that artist. And it's inevitable, they say. I love how people are celebrating and/or making excuses for technological trends that will result in their complete disenfranchisement down the line. Hey, I can't wait for them to perfect commercial cloning, so I can steal the DNA of a person I don't like, make improved clones of them, and sell them back to their place of work (if they're not doing that already). I'm frustrated that even the most staunch opposition to this is still softballing the issue of AI as if it's something that's even remotely desirable. We should be working the augment human ability, not outsourcing our competency to machines or working to build a machine god that may or may not recognize human values. We can stop this at any time, we just all need to get on the same page -- but that's the rub, I guess. Many people only think in terms of short term benefit, and are not willing to give up their new powerful toys. You get what you deserve if you don't see or care what's coming, and you don't fight it.
