The real question, and this is perhaps the time to ask it, is what is consciousness? Is it materialized? Can it be measured? Until now, humans have used consciousness as an arrogant element to distinguish themselves from other creatures, except that it won't work with AI, at some point if we want to know if AI is conscious we'll have to define “what is consciousness”.
