It's a bit callous to say "Oh well, after the progress dust settles everything will be better". This amounts to sacrificing one generation for the sake of those generations after them. To me, that's unacceptable. I think ethics must try to prevent "Omelas scenarios". So, in the assessment of progress, I wouldn't just downplay immediate effects like that.
That being said, I don't think we need to ban AI research outright. But we could consider regulations about research and applications.
