I was in the workforce back when classical Binary computers began impacting the labor market. I was a "manual" machinist, who operated Mills and Lathes. Other, well-funded machine shops started purchasing and using "Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC)" lathes and mills. They could manufacture parts at a speed which shops which still relied upon manual machinists could not match. The Manual machine shops largely died off, except for custom, one-off parts which were sometimes needed. Thankfully, in that time frame I also had a background in electronic design as well. I had to switch to working in that field. As computers continued to proliferate, many of the electronics folks switched to working with/on computers. I was one of those very early computer people. Finally, I felt I was on a train which would run for a long time. Electronics design and manufacturing (in the USA) began to die off, so switching to computers allowed me to make a solid income for decades. Then computer design started to fade away, and I moved to computer networking. That was a solid way to make money for about 2 decades, and then "cyber security" became the next hot ticket. I got my certification in that field, and started morphing my way into that job market. Now, the shiny new fields are cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence, and quantum computing. If workers (today) are going to stay relevant, they must look towards training in one of those fields. The simple fact is that NO career field lasts forever. This has been true since the 70s, and likely long before. If you are not constantly evolving your skill set, you are now living in a bubble. This is how it has been for over 50 years. I have some co-workers who are embracing AI. They used it to clean up their reports and documentation. Then they do a "final pass with human eyes" to further polish the final result. Those who embrace AI, and provide the "finishing step" will be able to ride this AI wave and stay employed. Those who don't, will be like the Manual Machinists from the late 1970s. They will lament how their skills, which were at one time valuable becomes deprecated to a novelty status.
