Can an unconscious entity lie? It doesn’t ‘know’ anything, and cannot know it is untrue or untrue, nor is it capable of deception. What we are seeing here is the concept of the white lie as found in the LLM’s training data manifesting itself in the LLM. Humans do this in our literature etc, so the LLM mimics it. LLMs do not think in any way shape or form. It’s pure statistical expression.
