I said to my husband something that I think these AI bros miss when they talk about art, and something that I think non-AI artists don't even realize about their art. Art is art when it is a statement of rebellion. Sometimes it's against society, against regulations, against the world being ugly or even to show that beauty exists in in the world in spite of that ugliness. Sometimes the statement is just committing the act of creation when art is so thoroughly undervalued, or just to see if you can do it. Yourself. Push yourself to learn, to make, to craft, to fix (yeah sewing and plumbing is art of a kind I think sure), to do something that doesn't make someone else the most amount of money for once. AI art is not a statement of rebellion, but a statement of compliance. When you feed your idea to a bot and ask it to create your idea instead of you doing it yourself, you give up the chance to exercise the very imaginative muscles that the higher ups in the capitalist wasteland that is the US want you to shut off so badly. You are willingly handing over your agency (AND PROMPTS, YOU DON'T OWN THOSE) to a big tech company. Draw a stick figure with a pencil because it makes you happy and for no other reason, you are more of an artist than someone who uses AI.
