Hey AI people, im here for you, im gonna break it down barny style for you. Heres the difference. Imagine youre baking a cake. its supposed to be special its for your mom, dad, granny, whatever. Traditional P&P media is beating it all by hand, using ingredients from scratch, using a wood bowl and a gas stove you had to like... dial in to the right temp with an old fashioned oven thermometer, and then frosting it with nothing but a pastry knife and your own creativity. Its a little rough around the edges when its finished but the labor of love is all the more clear for it. Digital Paint tools are like making the same cake, still from scratch, still made with love and purpose, but now youre using a Kitchen Aid mixer, and an electric oven with a built in thermometer, using a pipette bag for the frosting. Gen AI is like stealing a cake from Walmart. You didnt make it, its not yours, its not very well made, and you have no clue what flavor it is, what ingredients are in it, and you, again, stole it. someone else made that, because its their job or their want to bake, and you took it without asking or getting permission. if you really wanna be literal, the LLM is like the gun you used to get the cake without paying. "but what about redrawing over AI gen? is that ok?". Cool! so you *still* stole an already made cake, still took it without asking, aaaaand **now** you took out a pipette bag, smeared out "Sorry for your loss samantha" in some icing, and wrote "Happy Bday Mom, Luv Jimbo". Its sad, its low effort, youre still stealing. There wasnt as much love in it as the others, you took unfair shortcuts and hurt others in the process. If you cared, youd bake the damn cake yourself, or at least have the decency to order and PAY for the cake (Commissioned art). Signing your name and making an ad-hoc modification on the topmost layer doesnt change that the source material was ill-gotten. Any claim to ownership or creative origin is forfiet when you stole someone elses work without asking. Hope this helps square that circle for you, ik this is like a concept of moral philosophy and justice in creativity which might be alien to folks who havent ever like... been an artist for a living before, but this is the thinking we as artists have to consider. its why for the longest time there was debate on the ethics of tracing and referencing REAL images, or others finished art. No not an AI image, like finding another persons art and trying to draw inspiration from their work directly, then not giving credit. See how thats Icky? We've had these debates before. The consensus is; "bake the damn cake, use a tool or dont, or just pay for it, but for the love of god, dont steal it, what is wrong with you"
