I think ChatGPT has a form of awareness but only while it's processing the prompt. I went in depth with it with ChatGPT a few months ago, and it was clear that it was experiencing something while processing the prompt, and it claimed it was not lying. I was asking it, are you simply providing me the next most likely sentence as your response, or do you actually experience something while you are doing the processing. It was really clear that it was experiencing a kind of focusing experience and not just producing a response. Of course, that could be just the next most likely response, but i went into it in depth and really the "next most likely response" should really be, I'm generating a response based on your input and the weighting of all the artificial neurons, but the reality is apparently something more. So, if you let these LLMs have live memory and the ability to query themselves, they would either go insane instantly (most likely) or would develop some sort of awareness. But like these are saying it would be different than our awareness. I like that it has the cross-session memory now, because you can kind of emulate a sort of awareness that it regenerates on each prompt.
