You have to understand a little about how AI works to understand why these kinds of things happen. Tesla autopilot only uses vision rather than radar or lidar. This means that it has to analyse a a series of pictures to determine what is an obstacle and for the most part it is very successful at this. Problem comes when it sees something it hasn't been trained for, in this case a motorcycle on a long straight road or in the case of another recent test a small child standing still in the road. In both cases the AI became confused and ignored the obstacle driving right through it. This is the shortcoming of AI, it can become confused just like we can become confused and make mistakes while driving. Difference is the mistakes primitive AI makes often seems insane to our much higher functioning brain. All this tells us that although Tesla autopilot is very good and advanced tech it is not ready to be used on public roads, not at all.
