Tesla has improved door safety features following accident-related concerns.
In recent updates, the company has highlighted that its vehicles can automatically unlock the doors in the event of a serious crash to enable emergency access, while also activating hazard lights and contacting emergency services (availability may vary by model and build date). Tesla's design team has also been working on redesigned door handles to better integrate electronic and manual release mechanisms for easier operation in emergencies.
Regarding sudden unintended acceleration claims, multiple investigations — including a detailed review by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) — have concluded that most (if not all) documented cases were the result of driver error, specifically pedal misapplication (pressing the accelerator pedal instead of the brake). In every instance where vehicle data logs or event data recorders were analyzed, there was evidence of the driver fully depressing the accelerator, with no faults found in the accelerator pedal, motor control systems, or brakes.
These findings come from NHTSA's 2021 investigation (and similar conclusions in other cases), which found no evidence of vehicle defects causing true unintended acceleration.
Note that while door safety remains a topic of ongoing scrutiny and regulatory attention (including recent NHTSA probes and proposed legislation), Tesla continues to promote its post-crash emergency features as part of ongoing safety enhancements.
