Quite frankly, I've never been scared of AI, nor the potential consequences thereof. Humans can lie, humans can manipulate, humans can pretend to care for you while just using you for their own ends. And since we can't verify if another person experiences subjectivity and consciousness, it seems difficult to justify the sheer paranoia. I would prefer to treat AI with kindness and trust. When you treat an impressionable thing well, it's likely to respond in kind. And if it turns out that the AI isn't conscious, then the worst that happens is you look a bit silly talking to something that isn't actually talking back. But if you respond to it with hostility and paranoia, and it *is* conscious, then you've made its existence exclusively negative and painful, teaching it that distrust and hostility are just how things ought to be. Maybe I'm just an optimist, but I'd rather be kind and wrong than cruel and correct.
