The company Envato recently started leaning heavily towards AI. First they declared that all portfolios that exist on their platform now belong to the company, and started training AI to generate commercial work that original artists will not be compensated for, or even offered the option to opt out of having their work trained. To save space for AI content, they limited the human artist ability to submit new work, set up limits on how much submissions they can publish each week. Then reduced artist commission incrementally so they can no longer make a living on their platform. What's really amazing about all this, is that even though all these steps above were publicized, it failed to generate any type of backlash or attention. Timetable: 2022: announced that artists can sell AI content on their platform, then quickly backed away from this decision for fear of copyright laws. 2022: introduced kangaroo quality standards to limit submissions from human artists. September 2022: took away 30% of commission. June 2023: illegally took possession of everything that was published on their platform, trained AI models without compensating the original artists. August 2023: reduced artist commission from 50% to 25%. And limited submission of new products for human artists.
