There is a level of skill that can go into generative imagery. Undeniably, that skill is something that can be developed and put to use for humankind abroad. Perhaps one day it may even be a kind of art.
With that being said, generative imagery in its current form does not require any creative skill associated with visual art, and thus, by definition, does not qualify as visual art. Only the AI creating the images could potentially be credited as the “artist,” but due to their distinct lack of sapience, it is not possible for them to be expressing any level of their own perspective, instead simply following a set of instructions to get from point A to point B.
In short, there can be no “happy little accidents” from the AI - it doesn’t decide for itself what it likes or dislikes in a piece it creates, it adds or removes based on preprogrammed criteria. It is just a thing, not an individual, and so what it creates is product, not art.
