Using AI imagery for reference is useless, because the point of reference is trying to grasp The Actual Thing, and AI is not that. You either look at reality and train your eyes and mind to see shapes, shades, and movement that's really there and try to recreate them, which also helps you to develop your own point of view - or you look at the way other artists have done that and try to retrace their steps, to learn how different techniques give different effects, and by extension how to achieve the effect you want. AI is neither, because it creates a first-glance impression; the longer you study it, the less it's worth. You're not referencing objective reality, you're not referencing actual mediums and skills, you're not learning how to recreate OR create. There is no intent behind the specific decisions and there is no skill. AI imagery is content, not art. If you think it sufficient for any purpose, then you never actually interact with art beyond glancing at it and maybe mildly vibing with it. If we replace decorative, applied, commercial art with vaguely pretty imagery, like we've started replacing escapist entertainment with mindless content, we will starve. Art is not optional fluff, we need it for our full wellbeing.
