Ok, I am a designer myself by profession and work in an IT company and I have a completely different view on that topic. Bare with me, don't throw stones after me... yet. ;P
For AI as you said "In order for that image to be generated, there has to be a data set[...]" that's very true. But that also applies to human artists. We get inspired by other people's art and use inspiration from everything we see and experience throughout a creative process. Where is that different from what an AI does? How many artists use reference pictures by photographers or illustrations of other creators? I see so many artists on Behance or Artstation where they share their work process for certain pictures. This is not so much different.
"The moment we share our art online it's opted into the system [...] it will be found and it will be used as a piece of AI art." Our art is already part of so many people's collections on Pinterest and other platforms. It is already used by human artists to be part of their collection, of their personal "data set". And they use it to create photographs, illustrations, novels, or even movies.
How did creativity and arts evolve over thousands of years? Through copying and through people who got inspired and tried a certain thing but with a twist and a bit different, to make it something new.
BUT... and here comes the point I agree with you, the difference is that we don't know how specifically the AI uses the actual source or reference image to create the new one. Human artists must be protected in one way or another. We need rules for that.
But for both sides, cause there are already artists who incorporated AI into their workflow and are selling the created art and making money from that. I think it could be a totally different art form. Think about the possibilities. I think about AI as a tool rather than a threat. A tool that can help me create. A tool that compliments my creative process instead of doing it for me, cause that would be the wrong way.
I personally use it for brainstorming ideas and trying certain lighting options for a scene. It's a tool like Photoshop for me or Illustrator and not the devil. Also, the AI does not only learn from the reference picture it also learns from interaction with humans who use it and rate the pictures. So it's actually not so simple to say "It just steals our art!" it's so much more complex.
Overall what the AI does is a combination of
1. The task you give it and the adjustments you take while you are shaping the picture more and more to the version you imagined.
2. Using reference material the AI so far gathered.
3. The information the AI got from human interaction.
and more. An AI does not simply steal art it learns with and through this art and the people who use it. It's a very complex creation process. And I as an artist am excited about what it can do. I am not afraid to lose my job or money, AI will be widely used also by big companies, once we have rules and new laws set. No one can stop that. So better learn to live with it, sooner than later. And before you ask, no I don't mind if an AI would use one of my creations to create something else. This is how art styles developed and evolved throughout history. Using other people's work to create something new. I am excited to be part of this process. And I am very excited about your opinions.
