I admire both Musk and Hawking, but I'm going into cognitive/neuroscience to work on in silico approaches to neural simulation. Basically making artificial brains. That requires a lot of AI development. I agree to avoiding the development of AI weapons, that's just a terrible idea, but we shouldn't be hampering the overall development of AI. AI will also be essential to eventual interstellar travel and many other areas of technological development.
