How about we just avoid programming a robot to be sentient... Then this doesn't have to ever be an issue...
Machines and Robots don't have to be sentient in order for them to do a job... They are not sentient now and they work just fine... A toaster doesn't have to be alive to recommend toast or types of toast all it has to do is have an algorithm programmed into it that it searches for different kinds of toast using say.. Google and every morning when you start it up it displays a message saying "Good Morning (insert name here). This morning thought I should recommend Toast with grape jam rather than your usual toast with strawberry jam."
Simple as that if you ask me
