Technological unemployment is crucial for better democracy. One traditional argument against direct democracy has been that "people are too busy with their jobs and don't have enough time to think properly about their society & environment". Humans can be liberated from mechanical labor and instead engage more in politics (as well as in travel, science, art, relationships, and spirituality), so that they don't have to delegate the decision-making processes to the corruptible capitalists & politicians (who are the primary sources of most of the problems in the human civilization in its current configuration).
"What about incomes?" The need for incomes is proportionate to the price-tags of life necessities -- foods, shelters, etc. Proper automation would achieve optimal productivity, and the marginal cost of production would approach zero, which would enable the removal of price-tags from many goods & services. Whether you call it Fully-Automated Luxury Communism (cf. Peter Kropotkin, Murray Bookchin), or the Third-Industrial Revolution (cf Jeremy Rifkin). or Natural-Law Resource-Based Economy (cf. Jacques Fresco, Peter Joseph), it's a logical goal of any properly-progressing physical civilization.
