Driverless trucks will fall apart if used on the current dilapidated highway system in the U.S. The vibration will destroy the mechanisms used to control it. They would need there own road to travel on which is not economically feasible. So really what you are talking about is essentially a train which already has infrastructure in place. As you mentioned a load from coast to coast and for the automated truck to continue on without stopping is a good point but this is already remedied by team drivers and refrigerated train cars that load and unload inside giant coolers. The liability of an 80,000 pound truck with no driver operating on public roads with a computer making the decisions is complete insanity.
