This has just reafirmed some concerns I have with self driving cars. For the past seven years I have actually been a driver's ed instructor for a small private academy in Texas. I teach teens and adults how to safely and legally drive. That job gets more difficult each year as people grow less responsible. It's not just drunk driving that causes collisions. It's not just cell phones that cause collisions. It's not even just sleepy driving that causes collisions. Although these are perceived as the largest causes, they are only the result of people desregarding their responsibility. The automobile has truly created it's own culture around itself with increased mass production. My father's generation had a completely different view of driving then mine and mine has a completely different view then the present. He taught me to drive as a very young teen and as I teach todays teens their is a clear distinction; that parents dont teach their children responsibility. Parents are often the worst influences for driving today even more so than the racer lifestyle media projects. The reason there is such big focus on this now is that cars no longer represent "freedom on the open road." People don't like to be reminded of responsibility. Especially when their actions impact others negatively. The question of which life is more important is ludicrous. I really, really hope people can see that. For the self driven car to purposely collide with another vehicle is completely foolish. The vast majority of "accidents" are not accidents. They are collisions. Accidents are little less than an act of God that otherwise could not have been avoided. Collisions happen when people fail to make the right choice or purposely make the wrong choice. Drinking and driving is a choice. Using your phone while speeding is a choice. Driving when your sleepy from the night before is a choice. If you want to give up that choice to a self driving car than simply take some form of public transportation. People have forgotten that driving on public roads is a privilege that hinges on you making responsible choices not only for your self but for everyone else on the road as well. Sorry for the long rant but I can't stand looking at the news and seeing people make foolish choices and knowing so much pain could have been avoided if people simply thought and acted responsibly.
