Firstly, a self driving car would prepare for such a possibility and keep at a safe enough distance to slow down should the worst happen. But let's say that for some reason it didn't, all self driving cars would be connected to a network so that they may work in unison. To stop a crash from ever happening all you need is a large car network, a smart enough computer and a strong enough processes to do 100s of thousands of calculations a second. When you combine these things var crashes will become a thing of the past. Also crime will be reduced as getaway vehicles will be self driving meaning the police can lock all doors and force it to stop. It's gonna be a very bright future!
