These ethical dilemmas, and most others, evaporate under closer scruteny. First, it is NEVER appropriate to swerve into another lane with traffic in it, avoiding one accident by creating a ten car pile up on the freeway. Second, a self driving car should be maintaining a distance from the car in front sufficient to stop safely. Third, even if the self driving car were one foot away from the truck, given the almost instantaneous reaction time of the car, and that a car with abs can stop in near the theoretical minimum distance, the car would always be able to stop faster than the object falling off the truck.
