Comment
As a professional driver I feel well qualified to comment here. First of all right now drivers of heavy vehicles are treated poorly and many co.s take advantage of them. They are forces over hours and stranded away form home if they are considered difficult , IE , can I come home for a week off? Second , they do not make anywhere near what they should considering the amount of responsibility they have. A person driving a fully loaded B train grosses out at something like 140000 LBS. So a double trailer with that much weight? I think you want a real pro behind the wheel. It is a guided missile and in the wrong hands can kill scores at a time.. Here in Canada they pay less than 50 cents a mile and with the rules of service 500 miles a day is a stretch , I think. I have heard that the Republicans in the states have just had the hours of service per day increased. They know more people will die but the extra profits out weigh the law suits. Really?! OK , here is the point I wanted to make most. If they do automate tucking it will take time and they will stop attracting people to that career. That means that as a high time driver I will be in demand and I can ask more for my time. And I will. Human nature , don't ya just love it! I may be wrong and it will happen over night but if it does what are you going to do with all those out of work truckers? Millions of them and lets not forget the bus drivers and cabbies. And they VOTE. This is an issue here in Canada as well as the USA so someone better come up with an answer fast because you are looking at a sea change in the political landscape if they do not.
